Claridge's Hotel, located in the heart of Mayfair, London, has a rich history dating back to 1812. Originally known as Mivart's Hotel, it was renamed Claridge's in 1854 when William and Marianne Claridge took over. Over the years, it has become a favorite of royalty, celebrities, and dignitaries
Key Historical Highlights:
1856: Officially opened as Claridge's.
1860: Visited by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
1920s: Known for its vibrant post-WWI social scene.
1940s: Served as a refuge for exiled royalty during WWII.
1996: Major restoration led by designer Thierry Despont.
Recent Refurbishment:
Claridge's underwent a seven-year, multi-million-pound renovation that concluded in2021. This extensive project included:
Adding a five-storey basement with a spa, swimming pool, cinema, and wine cellar.
72 new rooms and suites, including a luxurious penthouse.
Restoration of the Art Deco wing while keeping the hotel operational.
The renovation was so impressive that it was featured in a BBC documentary series called
"The Mayfair Megabuild".
A portrait of Lady Claridge hangs in the lobby of Claridge's Hotel. The hotel has maintained its original charm while incorporating modern elements, and this portrait is a beautiful example of that blend. The artwork, along with other historical pieces, adds to the grandeur and timeless elegance of the hotel's lobby
The famous lift at Claridge's Hotel is actually the last manually operated hotel lift in London! Installed in 1896, it has been in continuous use ever since The lift is operated by a dedicated lift guardian named John Alves, who has been in the role since 2009.
This lift is a charming piece of history, featuring vintage scissor gates, Art Deco tiles, mirrors, and an upholstered seat. Guests often find it a delightful throwback to a bygone era, and John's warm greetings add a personal touch to the experience
Claridge's is all about luxury especially evident when it comes to the signature Suite ensuite bathrooms !!
